Ponte Preta might be the positive surprise this season, fighting for the Copa Libertadores in their 1st season in Serie A. They are at full strength, no injuries or suspensions, and went undefeated 6-1-0 over their last 7 games (only draw came vs leader Corinthians and they were leading until the 87th minute, down a man after a red card) before losing at 2nd place Atletico MG by a score of 2-1 last Sunday. At home they recently won 4 in a row while scoring 11 and conceding 4 and those games included 1st and 4th place teams Corinthians and Santos.
Joinville on the other hand is currently 2nd to last, has scored a laughable number of 6 goals in their 15 road games, haven't scored away from home in 5 consecutive games and will be missing their top striker Kempes (scored 6 of their 24 goals, plus was directly or indirectly involved in several more) due to suspension, by far their best and most dangerous attacker. Furthermore William Popp & Ricardo Bueno, two offensive players who started in their last match, will be out, too. Leaving them pretty much with 40year old grandpa Marcelinho as their only real scoring threat.
Due to their roster situation, they will also need to change from a 4-4-2 towards a 4-3-3 system, meaning that the spacing tomorrow might be off because it has been months since they last played that sort of formation.
First game ended with a 1-1 tie, but Joinville a very different team at home and Ponte Preta currently in way better shape and playing better than back then. Plus last year in Serie B both teams won their home games handily by a margin of 2.
